I disagree. I’m french,so I speak french, I’m learning English and spanish at high school. And when I meet americans in France, they never try to speak french, even if they’re supposed to be here for that ! Most of the time, I progress in english when they’re still as rubbish in french than before ( which means that all they can say is “merci beaucoup”), just because they know they got THE international language. But that’s great if you’re not like them. By the way, excuse me if I made mistakes.
I’m french and I have to tell you : it’s ( phonetically) pronounced “bocou” and it’s written “beaucoup”, so, even if he has the american accent, Obama’s pronunciation wasn’t so bad !

Instead TWICE he said it is cuatro de cinco
maybe HE needs foreign language lessons

I’m really surprised about how offended certain people react on learning another language.
I myself speak 4 languages and I can tell you it really opens doors when you don’t limit yourself to 1 language. You get a way better understanding of the world and about other cultures. It has nothing to do with neccessity or being able to speak with foreign workers.
And when you’re young and exposed to another language you also pick it up very easy. It’s a benefit for life and it cannot harm you at all.
With a multilangual person on the otherside of the phone line you wouldn’t have to press any button for any language…. I think that’s the point he tries to make..
I know but it’s not that easy to get people to think otherwise. I live in Quebec, Canada and learning English is wrong to a lot of people, even our politicians. They always fear assimilation but most of them don’t learn French properly! quite dumb!

As far as Democrats being a joke, neither major political party’s rhetoric is taken seriously, but the Democrats appear to be a little better off than the Republicans relative to Bush being widely regarded as perhaps the dumbest/least competent president in the history of the country.
The U.S. has managed a special kind of fucked up over the last 8 years and I’d be more than happy to trade it in for the European variety.
This is VERY true. I was learning Arabic in college when my daughter was a baby and she would hear my language tapes & see me doing my homework & she started learning it faster than I was! From that early exposure to another language, she picks up on new ones very quickly. Right now she’s teaching herself Japanese & taking Latin in school. No matter what career she chooses, she will be much more employable than the majority of her other classmates in this country (U.S.A.).
Do you have any idea how ignorant you come across here? I think before you criticize the President’s ability to speak Spanish, you might benefit from a refresher course in English grammar. Periods and commas are your friends. They won’t bite you, I promise.

He encourages people, especially children, to learn a foreign language. he doesn’t say things like: “latinos don’t have to learn english when they come to our country”. all he says is that learning foreign languages is important nowadays and that many U.S. americans don’t speak a foreign language while people travelling TO the U.S. (e.g. europeans) DO mostly speak foreign languages. I fully agree here
